Thursday’s Thought #2

Keeping control

One of the things that I pride myself on is not getting my dogs over excited and keeping them under control throughout an entire training sessions. This is something that I feel gets screwed up a lot. We end up giving them one to many marks, fun bumpers, or over encouragement. It is because of this that I try and bring control not only into the work that I am doing both before and during a session, but also after.

After I finish a session with a dog, I ask that dog to keeps its composure and heel with me on the way back to the truck. After that I do not let the dog have free range. I always end the session by returning my dog to its kennel for a little down time. To me this firstly allows the dog to have some time to decompress and shut off. It also blends beautifully into actual hunting where post hunt my dogs are expected to heel back with me and then return to the kennel until decoys and birds have been taken care of. Lastly, I believe that it gives time for the lesson to sink in a little bit and even more so sets up another opportunity to be under control when I go to finally let them out of the kennel after 5 – 10 minutes.

What are is post training routine?
